Recorded in 1963, just two months before Jackie McLean cut One Step Beyond, Vertigo wasn't released until 1980, when it finally surfaced as part of the LT Series. The session features a genuinely stacked quintet, trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Butch Warren and drummer Tony Williams, moving across a wide stylistic range within a single record: bristling post-bop on "Vertigo," sophisticated funk on "Dusty Foot" and slow blues on "Yams."
The hard bop centrepiece "Formidable" is drawn from a separate, earlier 1959 session featuring Byrd alongside pianist Walter Davis Jr., bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Pete LaRoca, giving the album a genuine split lineage across two different recording dates and personnel lineups.
