In 2017, Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) linked their minds to stir a contemporary movement of jazz, establishing the imprint Jazz Is Dead. The first album from the label’s self-titled series brings a restored swell of life and curious nods to the past for the beloved genre.
Jazz Is Dead 001 crosses the complexities of how jazz has evolved through the years, encapsulating the sounds like intricate weaves of quiet woodwinds to frenzied tempos and rhythms. As the first of the series, Younge and Shaheed Muhammad tease the sultry sound and legends to be summoned for the project. “It’s surreal to be in the studio with cats ranging from Marcos Valle to Roy Ayers. The stories, the music and the experience is something Jazz Is Dead wants to share with the world,” Adrian Younge noted.
